Bekker Transport is a small owner-operated business based on the Cunningham Highway in Queensland, between Warwick and Goondiwindi. The business fills an industry niche, answering the demand from rural communities that are not located on main transport routes, where on-farm deliveries can be complex to arrange and prohibitive in cost. Bekker Transport will shift your freight from depot-to-depot, manufacturer-to-farm, property- to-property or from auctions and clearing sales to the buyer.

THE PROPRIETOR: Nina Bekker comes from a farming background, with her early life spent on her mum’s beef cattle stud in the Northern Rivers Region of NSW. As with many young people from rural communities, Nina left the farm to work in the mining industry. Since her father was a geologist, this seemed an even more natural move, and she travelled ‘home’ to her birthplace in the Southeast Goldfields of WA. The industry at this stage was still very resistant to employing women and Nina was one of the first of the ‘fairer sex’ to be employed in the earthmoving area. She operated a range of mining equipment including Rockbreaker-excavator, wheel-dozer, and the Komatsu WA800 – then one of the largest front-end loaders in Australia. This is where she grew an interest in big machines, often spending her down-time in the mine workshop, coated in grease and savouring the diesel fumes.

A return to the highway was inevitable. Nina spent 7 years as a road pilot-escort before being elevated to a higher position– about 2 meters higher – into the drivers’ seat of a semi, which is where she has been for the past 5 years.

“I spent a lot of time looking for the truck I wanted: something with a relatively small engine, but still able to tow a triaxle trailer and a bit of weight, plus I really wanted a single-drive – this reduces rego, fuel and running costs, which allows me to offer a lower kilometre rate than some of my competitors. I don’t have the experience to drive a really big truck or carry huge loads, so I chose a gap in the industry and a truck to suit. If you pass me on the highway, you’ll notice that I go at a pretty relaxed pace. It’s safer and cheaper – and it suits my age bracket.”

Bekker Transport will work with you to deliver on time, in full and within an affordable budget.
